DAY 21

(Extra Reading: Galatians 6:16-18)

“But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.”

There is no gospel without the cross of Christ. The one and only Gospel of Jesus is the cross of Jesus. At the cross, everything changed. The cross of Christ ushered in an unprecedented age unexpected by everyone, untouched by no other event, past, present or future, leaving no stone unturned to rip God’s creation out of death into glorious light.

Jesus took your sin and my sin upon Himself and hung on the cross in our place. He fulfilled the righteous requirements of the law by dying as payment for sin. He fulfilled the law and died to the law. When we put our faith in Him, we too fulfil the requirements of the law and die to the law.

Thank you Jesus for the cross! The cross of Christ is able to pierce the hardest heart and make the darkest night shine as bright as the sun. Every song of worship that we sing attempts to put worship language to what happened at the cross and the effects of the cross of Christ.

We boast in a cross because the cross speaks of a King with did whatever it would take to have us spend eternity with Him. It is the cross which atones for our sins. It is because of the blood of Jesus Christ shed on that cross that we are able to be “justified”, clothed with the righteousness of Christ in the eyes of God. Through the death of Jesus the world is crucified to us and we are crucified to the world. In other words, the world does not have a grip on us anymore and we have no pull to go back to the world anymore. How could we? We have died to that old way of living. We have ended our relationship with the world. The world does not like us, and we do not like the world. To go back to the law now would be to go back to being worldly all over again. And as a righteous person who lives by faith, that would be the last thing we want to do.

Circumcision doesn’t count for anything. Uncircumcision doesn’t count for anything. Being a Jew doesn’t count for anything. Being a Gentile doesn’t count for anything. Self-righteousness cannot save us or sanctify us. Living by the law cannot save us or sanctify us. Jewish culture cannot save us or sanctify us. The only thing that counts is being a new creation through the doorway of faith in Jesus.

I’m with Paul. God forbid that I should glory in anything except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. There is no other way of salvation.

                QUESTIONS TO REFLECT ON:

                1. What am I boasting in today?

                2. What is my relationship with the law?

                  3. What is my relationship with the world?

                    4. How will I express my gratitude to God right now for making me a new creation?
